Our Location, History and Partnerships
La Casita Center is located in the Casa Latina, on the campus of the former church, The Chapel of St. Philip. Casa Latina and La Casita Center have evolved to be mutually supporting sister organizations, with Casa Latina providing a physical space and La Casita Center creating spaces throughout Louisville for community-building, hospitality and social justice. Now a non-profit organization, the Chapel of St. Philip maintains the historic buildings on its campus in the service of the community.
Casa Latina was started as an intentional lay community in 1998 and evolved into the Casa Latina Catholic Worker in 2002. The Casa Latina’s Mission Statement is “we are a group of women of faith, committed to creating a space for Latina women where community is lived and shared and where doors to a better life may by opened; where each one may make real their own dreams and goals.” Casa Latina is a physical space that provides hospitality and support to Latina women and children in partnership with La Casita Center.
Members of Casa Latina founded the Latina Women’s Movement to foster leadership development, empowerment and community building amongst Latina women. La Casita Center now plays the role of facilitating, accompanying and supporting the movement and other outreach activities that began through the members and efforts of Casa Latina.
